The Bright Narrative: Our Fearless Interior Design Process
Kitchen remodel in the Wilcox Estates area of Southwest Portland.
A room is never stagnant. If you’re doing it right, it’s a living, breathing thing: a sanctuary for Sunday morning coffee, a high-energy backdrop for a dinner party that lasts until 2 AM, and a place where you can finally exhale. At Bright Designlab, we believe good design makes a space functional, but great design? That’s about narrative. It’s about ensuring every textural layer and every pop of fearless color has a reason for being there.
We get asked all the time: "How do you actually get from a blank slate to a finished home that feels so... me?" The answer is wrapped up in The Bright Narrative. It’s our rigorous, slightly obsessive, and totally art-forward design process. Whether you’re looking for a residential interior designer in Portland or planning a full-gut renovation in California, the journey is what ensures the destination is unprecedented.
Two Ways We Tell Your Story
Before we get into the "how," let’s talk about the "what." At our Portland design studio, we tackle projects from two complementary angles:
The Comprehensive Design Process: This is the big stuff. Space planning, architectural drawings, selecting the stone that makes your heart skip a beat, documenting every light fixture and switch, coordinating with the contractor through the bidding process, and managing the dusty reality of construction. This is just the start.
FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment): This is where we round out the story. It’s everything not attached to the house: the Mohair sofa, the custom dining room table that extends to seat 14 when needed, the tailored window treatments, and that one-of-a-kind vintage rug.
These two often run parallel, weaving together to create interiors with deep emotional resonance.

Why Having a Map Matters (Even for Rebels)
Many of our clients come to us after trying to play "General Contractor" and navigate the interior design process themselves. They have the taste, they have the vision, but they quickly realize that managing 400 tiny decisions while navigating a 26-week lead time for a custom faucet is a recipe for a breakdown.
Our value isn't just in the creative spark; it’s in the relentless management of the details. We document every decision, fight for the integrity of the design onsite, and make sure you only have to do the fun part: falling in love with your new space.
Phase 1: The Spark (Discovery)
Duration: One 30-60 minute conversation.
The Vibe: First date energy.
Every great story needs a beginning. This is our complimentary discovery call where we talk about your goals, your budget, and whether we’re the right design studio in Portland to bring your vision to life. We specialize in comprehensive projects: think whole-home transformations or a minimum of three interconnected spaces. If you’re looking for someone to just "pick a paint color for the guest room," we might not be your match. But if you want to reinvent the way you live? Let’s talk.
Phase 2: The Lore & The Law (Pre-Design)
Duration: 1-2 weeks.
The Vibe: Gathering the ingredients.
Once we’ve made it official, we dive into your world. We send a team out to measure every nook, task you with answering our carefully crafted questionnaires, and: most importantly: listening to your stories. Where have you traveled? What’s the one piece of art that you love to look at? We’re not just looking for a "style"; we’re looking for the narrative language we’ll speak throughout the project.
Phase 3: The Vision Quest (Schematic Design)
Duration: 2 weeks.
The Vibe: Stepping into the unknown.
This is where we challenge you. We take everything we learned in Phase 2 and present 2-3 space planning options and mood boards that push boundaries. We might suggest a layout you never considered or a color palette that feels slightly "uncomfortable" in the best way possible. This is the stage where we birth the ideas that make a Bright Designlab curated home stand out from the sea of cookie-cutter gray.

Phase 4: The Deep Dive (Design Development)
Duration: 4 weeks.
The Vibe: The creative hive mind is buzzing.
Now we make it real. We move from 2D sketches to elaborate 3D models. You’ll see a rendering of how that custom cabinetry will look next to the hand-painted local wallcovering. We’re diving into the distinctive finishes: the plumbing fixtures that feel like jewelry, the custom millwork, and the hardware that you’ll touch every single day. This is the phase where we plan for those 26-week lead times (where we hit hard with the checklists and keeping our eye on the ball) so your project stays on track.
Phase 5: The Master Plan (Construction Documentation)
Duration: 4 weeks.
The Vibe: Heads-down, caffeine-fueled precision.
This is the most technical part of our life as an interior designer in Portland, OR. We translate our big ideas into a Bid Set: a comprehensive map for your General Contractor. We’re talking lighting plans, plumbing schedules, and millwork shop drawings so detailed they leave no room for "guessing." Because "guessing" in construction usually costs money, and we’re not about that.
Phase 6: The Watchful Eye (Construction Administration)
Duration: 16+ weeks (Construction is a marathon, not a sprint).
The Vibe: The ultimate collaboration.
Once the hammers start swinging, we don’t just vanish. We’re onsite, interfacing with trades, reviewing shop drawings, and solving the inevitable "surprises" that old houses like to hide behind their walls. Whether it’s a Manzanita retreat or a Forest Park renovation, we’re there to ensure the vision we created together is executed with careful craftsmanship.

FF&E: Rounding Out the Story
While the walls are going up, we’re also working on your Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment. This is the soul of the home. We’re not shopping at big-box stores; we’re working with local makers, artisans, and trade-only resources.
The Sourcing: Finding that perfect vintage lounge chair or commissioning a custom dining table.
The Procurement: We handle the quotes, the tracking, the shipping, and the "where is my sofa?" phone calls.
The Reveal: The best day of all. Delivery, placement, and styling. This is when the house finally becomes a home.
Real Talk: The Investment
Let’s be real: quality design is an investment of both time and money. Total design fees typically range from 15-20% of your total project budget. A whole-home renovation can take a year (or more), and even a "simple" bathroom remodel is realistically a four-month journey from start to finish.
We aren't the firm for "rush" projects or piecemeal consulting. We’re the firm for people who value sustainable practices, local craftsmanship, and a Japandi kitchen that feels like a work of art.
